What’s happening:
The US EPA rule governing the testing of lead in surface wipes is lowering the limits for lead. Traditionally, flame AA was the technique of choice for speed of analysis and ease of method setup.
The NIOSH Procedure 7082 (Flame AA) is no longer the answer. For a wipe area of 10 cm x 10 cm and a final sample volume of 10 mL, the new quantitation limit for lead wipes from floors is 0.05 g/mL. This requires an MDL of at least 0.025 g/mL. These limits are well below the capability of Flame AA technique to accurately determine.
When the rule takes effect: January 6, 2020
Who’s Impacted: Labs supporting lead wipe testing – such as NLLAP Labs
